LSD Rear End
How to upgrade the performance on a grocery getter? Unfortunately, the wagon version of the 510 has a solid axle vs. the independent rear end that comes in the sedan and coupe. While that gives better storage room, it limits the performance aspects. Luckily, the 89-94 Mazda RX-7’s had a solid axle rear end just similar to the wagon, but certain versions had an LSD and disc brakes. Both big upgrades.
We had to find the specific model version: the GSL-SE. Once we sourced the appropriate rear end, then came time to make it fit. That required shortening both sides by 1 inch. The axle’s were shortened and resplined as well. Custom mounts and other modifications were made to fit.
Next was tackling the disc brakes. New discs and pads, which match the slotted brakes upfront were added. We also rebuilt the rear calibers. Finally, everything got a new coat of paint.
